Born in Nizhni Novgorod (Russia), Igor Levit moved to Germany with his family at age eight. He completed his piano studies at Hannover Music University with the highest score. His teachers included Karl-Heinz Kämmerling and Hans Leygraf. In 2005 Igor was the youngest participant in the Arthur Rubinstein Competition in Tel Aviv, where he won the Silver, Chamber Music, Audience, and Contemporary Music Performance prizes. In 2018 he received the prestigious ‘Gilmore Artist Award’, and was appointed Professor of Piano at Hannover Music University. His highly acclaimed recordings have won awards including Gramophone’s ‘Artist of the Year, the Opus Klassik and both BBC Music Magazine’s ‘Recording of the Year’ and Instrumental Award. He recorded a special album in response to 7 October 2023. His commitment to human rights has won him numerous awards. His first book ‘House Concert’ was followed in 2022 by a documentary movie ‘Igor Levit – No Fear’.
