Chief Conductor designate of the Philharmonie Südwestfalen, commencing summer 2019, and Music Director of the Munich Chamber Opera since 2011, Nabil Shehata began his conducting career in 2006, encouraged and mentored by Daniel Barenboim. Following his critically acclaimed debut in 2007 he has conducted orchestras world-wide, including the Berlin Radio Symphony, Düsseldorf Symphony, Ljubljana Radio Symphony, Bilbao Symphony and Simon Bolivar orchestras. Born to parents of German and Egyptian descent, Nabil grew up in Germany, studying piano with his mother. He began double bass studies at age nine under Michinori Bunya and Esko Laine. He has won several international competitions including the ARD Munich Competition (First Prize and Audience Favourite). He was Principal Bass with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, performing as a soloist under Daniel Barenboim. He is deeply committed to the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra of which he has been a member for many years.
