Clarinettist, composer and conductor, Jörg Widmann studied clarinet with Gerd Starke in Munich and Charles Neidich at the Juilliard School, New York. He has performed with leading orchestras including the Gewandhaus (Leipzig), Tonhalle-Orchester (Zurich), National Symphony (Washington), Vienna Philharmonic, Nederlands Philharmonic, Montreal Symphony, and Toronto Symphony orchestras, under conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, Christoph Eschenbach and Christoph Dohnanyi. Clarinet concertos written for and premiered by him include works by Mark Andre, Wolfgang Rihm, and Aribert Reimann. He is a Fellow at the Wissenschaftskollege (Berlin), and a full member of the Bayrische Akademy der Schönen Künste, the Hamburg Freien Academy der Künste, and the Literatur Mainz Academy der Wissenschaften. He is currently Professor of Composition at the Barenboim-Said Academy, Berlin.
