Project Description

Martha Argerich – piano

Born in Buenos Aires, Martha Argerich was a child prodigy who began performing in public at an early age. Her teachers in London, Vienna and Switzerland were Seidlhofer, Gulda, Magaloff, Michelangeli, Lipatti and Askenase. In 1957 she won both the Busoni (Bolzano) and Geneva Piano Competitions, and the Warsaw Chopin competition (1965). Although frequently invited by the most prestigious orchestras, conductors and music festivals in Europe, Asia and America, chamber music remains a significant part of her life. She plays and records with musicians such as Nelson Freire, Alexander Rabinovitch, Mischa Maisky, Gidon Kremer and Daniel Barenboim. She records for the EMI, Sony, Philips, Teldec and Deutsche Grammophon labels and has received numerous awards. In 1998 she was appointed Artistic Director of the Beppu Festival, Japan; in 1999 she founded the Martha Argerich International Piano Competition and Festival Buenos Aires; and in 2002 the Progetto Martha Argerich in Lugano, Switzerland.
