Julian Steckel – cello
Born 1982 into a musical family, Julian Steckel began playing the cello at age five. His teachers were Ulrich Voss, Gustav Rivinius, Boris Pergamenshikow, Heinrich Schiff and Antje Weithaas. He won First Prize at the 2010 International ARD Music Competition (Munich), and was also awarded Audience Prize, Munich Chamber Orchestra Prize and Oehms Classics Prize. Together with his solo career, Julian Steckel has a passion for chamber music. The Oehms Classic label recently released his CD of Russian cello sonatas. In 2012 he was awarded the prestigious ECHO Klassik prize for his recording of cello concerti by Korngold and Goldschmidt, and Bloch’s Schelomo, with the Rhine Philharmonic Orchestra Koblenz. This year his CD of cello concerti by C.P.E. Bach was released. Since 2011 he has been Professor of Cello at the Rostock University of Music and Drama. Currently he is artist-in-residence with the Heidelberg Philharmonic Orchestra.
