Project Description

Dietrich Henschel – baritone

Dietrich Henschel’s international career took off with his performance in the title-role of Busoni’s Doktor Faust at the Lyon Opera, bringing him a Grammy award for the CD of this production, and invitations from important opera houses in Europe. Henschel’s repertoire extends from Monteverdi to modern avantgarde, including roles in The Barber of Seville, The Rake’s Progress (Nick Shadow), Pelléas et Mélisande (Golaud) and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (Beckmesser). Contemporary composers Peter Eötvös, Detlev Glanert, José-Maria Sanchez-Verdu and Unsuk Chin have dedicated major roles to him in their operas. His numerous recordings, CDs and DVDs, and his collaboration with leading conductors such as Gardiner, Harnoncourt, Herreweghe and Davis testify to his success as a lied interpreter and oratorio singer. His most recent project is Wunderhorn, a feature film on songs from Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn which premiered in 2015.
